William Todd English is known as the celebrity chef that owns Olives restaurant in both Boston and Las Vegas, as well as his PBS cooking show, Cooking Trip. Just like many other celebrity chefs, Todd English has now come out with his own line of hard anodized cookware. But unlike other celebrity chefs, it seems that Todd English didn’t put quite enough thought into his own.
Firstly, this set only comes with seven different pieces. While that may sound like a lot, one must also keep in mind that three of those pieces are lids, so you really only get four pots and pans in total. These are the pots and pans that you’ll get in this Todd English set: a 2 quart saucepan, with lid; an 8 quart stockpot, with lid; a 9 ½ inch skillet; and a 12 inch sauté pan, with lid and a helper’s handle, which is an additional rounded handle on the side as well as the long stainless steel handle.
The lids in this set aren’t even that great. They’re made from stainless steel, so you can’t see through them while your food is cooking. This means that you’ll have to lift the lid off to see what progress your food is making. This means that your hand may get burnt, because stainless steel can become quite hot, especially when it’s that close to the heat. It also means that when you lift the lid off, you’ll lose that precious steam and heat that’s so important to your food.
Another drawback of the Todd English hard anodized cookware is that they are coated with a non-stick finish, which many users do say chip, peel, and flake off. Some users say this isn’t a problem if you season the pans first and use non-stick cooking spray. It’s very important to note that hard anodized cookware should never have to be seasoned and that most celebrity chefs would tell you that non-stick cooking spray is just about one of the worst things you could ever use for your food or your pans.
The only good things about these pots and pans are that they are heat resistant up to 500 degrees, which is more than most; and that they can be washed in the dishwasher. Still, at $129.90 for essentially only four pots and pans (and ones that aren’t that great mind you), we highly recommend that you find another product. The T-Fal hard anodized cookware, Rachel Ray hard anodized cookware, or Martha Stewart hard anodized cookware lines are all much, much better options than what you’ll get with the Todd English set.
